About Trace Bellmont

Crime fiction from the Piney Woods of East Texas.

Trace Bellmont writes crime fiction set in the Piney Woods of East Texas.

There is a road like this on the way to every lake in the state. You turn off the highway and for three quarters of a mile you are somewhere else — cars in the yards, a burn pile, a nativity lit in June, a dog that runs alongside you without barking — and then you cross a creek and the pavement gets better and the yards go green, and you are at the water.

Same town. Same county. Same school district. Same volunteer fire department. A different name on the other side of a bridge.

People drive that road twice a month for eleven years and could not name one person who lives on it. That is not a failure of character. It is what the road is built to do.

The Sandy Acres novels start in that gap and work outward — who owns the land, who gets believed, and what a county does with a body when it has no medical examiner and no particular reason to look twice.

The Only Road In is the first.
